The U.S. Geological Survey has said a magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border late Sunday.

At least 250 people were killed and 500 injured across multiple districts, Afghanistan's state-owned Bakhtar News Agency reported on Monday.

The quake's epicenter was near Jalalabad, Nangarhar province, and had a depth of 8 kilometers.

Rescuers were working in several districts of the mountainous province where the midnight quake hit levelling homes of mud and stone.

Afghanistan is prone to deadly earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.
