At Wah Fu Estate on Hong Kong Island, residents gathered this summer for their first Yu Lan Ghost Festival since the COVID pandemic.

For Wah Tai House residents there, it could also be their last with the estate soon to undergo redevelopment.

The ritual began in the afternoon.

Taoist priests set up the altar and performed the dramatic "breaking open of hell" ritual -- a rite meant to free wandering spirits.

Yu Lan Ghost Festival, listed as part of Hong Kong's intangible cultural heritage, is more than just spectacles.

For older residents here, it's a way to honour ancestors though some admit few young people understand the tradition with fewer willing to carry it on.

For now, residents cling to this year's gathering for perhaps one last time under the Wah Fu sky.
