Financial Secretary Paul Chan revealed that the "Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou" cluster is set to see a "more impressive" ranking this year in the upcoming Global Innovation Index by the World Intellectual Property Organization, or WIPO.

So far, the region has ranked second worldwide for five consecutive years.

The finance chief writes in his latest blog post that innotech development has long been a strategic priority for the SAR government.

This as Hong Kong develops into an international innovation hub that integrates strengths of finance, innovation and technology and intellectual property.

Chan announced that on Monday, WIPO will hold two events in Hong Kong. They include signing a memorandum of cooperation with the SAR government in which the Hong Kong judiciary will share judgments in a database in the field of intellectual property.

That would give WIPO a clearer understanding of Hong Kong's relevant legal protection system and enhance their confidence in tapping Hong Kong to engage in R&D and related investments.

Chan says last year, the number of start-ups in Hong Kong soared 10 percent year-on-year to a record high of 4,700 with about 20 unicorn companies at the Science Park and Cyberport.
