The government plans to amend legislation to limit the number of mobile devices drivers can place in front of them when driving.
The proposed changes will be submitted to the Legislative Council next month, and are expected to take effect on January 25 next year.
With riding-hailing apps becoming increasingly prevalent, many commercial vehicles and taxi drivers have such "setups" near the steering wheel to pick up orders.
Under the government's proposed new rules, drivers will be allowed no more than two mobile devices with screens not exceeding 18 centimetres diagnonally. Devices must not obstruct their line of sight.
Mable Chan, Secretary for Transport and Logistics, wrote on her blog that amendments will apply to all motorists.
With the new school year about to start in September, Chan revealed that the government will propose amendments to require all student service vehicles to be equipped with seat belts in passenger seats, which will be implemented from January 25 next year.
