In an interview with Chinese state media Xinhua News, Russian President Vladimir Putin says his country and China will discuss "new prospects and new measures" for mutually beneficial cooperation down the road.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is poised to visit China for four days starting on Sunday. In a written interview with Xinhua News before his trip, Putin says he would discuss various issues with President Xi Jinping and exchange views on "important regional and international issues."

The Russian leader says Moscow commends President Xi Jinping's efforts to develop a comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia, noting he would discuss with China new prospects and new collaborative measures to benefit the people of both nations.

He also compares the "strategic relations" between Russia and China to "ballast" -- heavy weights that prevent ships from capsizing -- as they provide a stabilising and anchoring force under current challenges and threats.

Apart from noting how Russia-China economic relations have reached an unprecedentedly high level, he says some Western countries have tampered achievements of World War II by distorting historical truths or covering up events to cater to their current political situation. He notes that Russia and China firmly condemn such moves.

The Kremlin has also unveiled the itinerary for Putin's China visit. The Russian leader will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin in the first two days
before heading to the capital Beijing. On Tuesday, he will hold several bilateral talks with President Xi.

Moscow says Putin has promised Xi he would share in detail outcomes of this month's Russia-U.S. summit.

On Wednesday -- the last day of his visit -- Putin will attend China's military parade for the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and victory in the World Anti-Fascist War as a guest of honour.

At the event, Putin will be seated to the right of President Xi, and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will sit at Xi's left. In May, Russia held a military parade on Red Square where Xi was seated to Putin's right.
