Israel has declared Gaza City a dangerous combat zone, saying its military is in the initial stages of a planned offensive.

Palestinians, most already displaced several times, are on the move again after being told to do so by Israel.

While United Nations agencies and aid groups condemned the offensive, people in Gaza City said it made little difference.

Mohammed Maarouf says he and his family of nine have little to look forward to.

We have no food, no money, no anything, he said. We are thrown in the streets like dogs but dogs are better than us.

Israel's military said it suspended midday pauses to fighting, which had allowed food and aid supplies to enter the city.

Explosions continued in the area that Israel calls a Hamas stronghold even after 23 months of war.

It comes as European allies become more critical of Israel's blockade of Gaza, which has resulted famine in the largest city.

Kaja Kallas, the European Union foreign policy chief, spoke about Gaza ahead of an EU foreign ministers' meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark.

"This is still very problematic," said Kallas. "And the news coming from Gaza, not very encouraging when it comes to the new war zone or combat zone or the ideas that come from there."

Britain, France and Canada are set to formally recognise a Palestinian state at the U.N. next month, further angering Israel.

The United States, however, have remained firmly by Israel's side, and this week Secretary of State Marco Rubio revoked visas to Palestinian leaders wanting to attend next month's General Assembly at U.N. headquarters in New York.

"This statement attributed to the State Department was just released, it was brought to my attention just about half an hour ago," said Palestinian U.N. Ambassador Riyad Mansour.

"We will see exactly what it means and how it applies to any of our delegation and we will respond accordingly."

Meanwhile, Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Ankara has completely cut off trade with Israel, closed ports to their ships and barred Israeli aircraft from entering their airspace.

Turkey severed direct trade ties with Israel in May last year, demanding a permanent ceasefire and the immediate entry of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

In 2023 the two countries carried out 7 billion U.S. dollars in trade.
