China will host the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation or SCO summit from Sunday to Monday in the northern port city of Tianjin.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Beijing early this morning ahead of attending the summit in Tianjin.
Guterres was present at the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing as well as the SCO Summit in Astana of Kazakhstan last year.
At the summit this year, President Xi Jinping is expected to deliver keynote speeches with a focus on deepening cooperation within the body and strengthening its role in global governance.
Ahead of the summit, Foreign Minister Wang Yi wrote on People's Daily saying in the face of "bullying acts," SCO member states have stood firm in defending the basic norms of international relations since its establishment 24 years ago.
Set to attend the summit too is Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is expected to hold talks with President Xi, as ties between the Asian giants thaw against the backdrop of U.S. President Donald Trump's punitive tariffs on New Delhi.
Also participating is Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
