Chief Executive John Lee attended a ceremony this morning commemorating the 80th anniversary of victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
The ceremony took place at the Monument for Martyrs Against Japanese Militarism in Tam Chuk Wan in Sai Kung. John Lee stood alongside Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak, representatives of the People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison, and members of the disciplined services. Before the ceremony began, the flag-raising procession entered the venue, where they stood and sang the national anthem.
They then observed a two-minute silence to pay tribute to anti-Japanese martyrs.
Lee laid a wreath and paid his respects before delivering a speech.
John Lee said the Monument for Martyrs Against Japanese Militarism serves to remind people of the importance of peace.
He said, "The world is currently undergoing unprecedented changes, with geopolitical uncertainty and unpredictable circumstances. Peace is far from over."
"We remember history not to perpetuate hatred and grief, but to awaken people's yearning for and perseverance for peace, so that people around the world can share in peace," said the chief executive.
