Deadly Russian strikes hit Ukraine despite emergency UN meeting

A Russian attack on Zaporizhzhia in southern Ukraine killed at least one person with three children among 28 wounded.

Russia says it shot down Ukrainian drones over Moscow-annexed Crimea as the two countries trade attacks.

Diplomats across the world are scrambling fearing an escalation of the war.

A lucky cat and his grateful young Ukrainian owner escaped Russian strikes in Zaporizhzhia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for meetings about progressing peace talks this week but European countries are worried the war is getting worse.

Foreign ministers are meeting in Copenhagen and before talks got underway diplomats in Denmark were outlining the significance of this weekend's meeting.

We want peace in Ukraine, but it has to be a fair and lasting peace for Ukraine. 

An emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council was convened as Kyiv mourns.

Ukraine and the five European countries wanted the meeting as they called Russia"tone deaf" toward peace.

Europe's diplomatic compound was damaged as a building was destroyed.

Ukraine says this Russian attack left 25 dead with the Prime Minster putting names and faces to the dead by holding up photographs.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said: " Sixty-three others were injured, among them, 11 children. The youngest victim was a girl not yet three years old.

"These strikes on civilian areas must stop immediately", added  John Kelley Acting U.S. Representative to the UN as his President Donald Trump tries to broker peace

Meanwhile, Russia blamed Ukraine for putting people in harm's way.

Moscow's First Deputy Permanent Representative at the UN Dmitry Polyanskiy saying: "Ukraine's attacks on the territory of Russia are deliberately ignored."
