The Light Public Housing project at Choi Hing Road in Ngau Tau Kok was completed in just about one and a half year, breaking the record for the fastest high-rise construction in Hong Kong.
Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho noted that Light Public Housing features fewer amenities and uses different construction methods, allowing for faster construction. Future new housing estates will also consider reducing amenities to speed up the construction process.
The overall waiting time for rental public housing has recently dropped to 5.1 years, a seven-year low.
The Secretary for Housing described Light Public Housing as "lifeboat," with the gradual completion of these units showing results in increased housing supply.
9,500 Light Public Housing units were completed this year, with 30,000 expected to be available next year.
Ho noted that Light Public Housing estates utilize Modular Integrated Construction(MiC) technology, which allows projects to be built faster than traditional public housing. Combined with the basic surrounding amenities, this allows residents to move into housing more quickly.
