The Light Public Housing project at Choi Hing Road in Ngau Tau Kok was completed in just one and a half years, breaking the record for the fastest high-rise construction in Hong Kong.
Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho explained why Light Public Housing can be completed quicker than traditional projects.
Ho noted that Light Public Housing features fewer amenities and uses different construction methods, allowing for faster construction.
9,500 Light Public Housing units were completed this year, with 30,000 expected to be available next year.
Ho said the Choi Hing Road project will not have shopping malls, old people's home and wet market, which facilitates for faster completion.
Future new housing estates will also consider reducing amenities to speed up the construction process.
Ho added Light Public Housing estates utilise Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) technology, which allows projects to be built faster than traditional public housing.
She described Light Public Housing as a "lifeboat," with the gradual completion of these units showing results in increased housing supply.
