The U.S. Trump administration has approved an 825-million-U.S. dollar arms sale to Ukraine that will include extended-range missiles
and related equipment to boost its defensive capabilities.

This as U.S. efforts to broker peace between Ukraine and Russia appear stalled.

Meanwhile, Kyiv's mayor has called the Russian attack on Thursday that killed at least 21 people a "terrible night" for Ukraine's capital.

Tracey Furniss reports.

Part of Russia's massive drone attack on the Ukrainian capital early Thursday morning caught on a video surveillance camera.

Authorities said the attack on Kyiv killed at least 21 people and injured at least 48. The strikes damaged the office of the British Council shattering windows and damaging interiors.

And strikes hit just 20 meters from the EU Mission to Ukraine building. No one was injured.

European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen summoned Russia's EU envoy to Brussels over the incident. The UK took similar steps.

Kaja Kallas, a top EU diplomat wrote on X that no diplomatic mission should ever be a target.

Kyiv's mayor Vitalii Klitschko described the strikes as devastating as they hit both residential and non-residential buildings. The attacks included a rare strike in the city centre.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia's major aerial attack on Kyiv shows President Vladimir Putin is choosing ballistics instead of real steps towards peace.

The White House was not happy about the attack and U.S. President Donald Trump's press secretary criticised both countries.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said: "He was not happy about this news, but he was also not surprised. These are two countries that have been at war for a very long time. Russia launched this attack on Kyiv. And likewise Ukraine recently dealt a blow to Russia's oil refineries. They have taken out as a matter of fact, 20 percent of Russia's oil refinery capacity over the course of their attacks throughout the month of August. So the president is continuing to watch this intently. And this killing unfortunately, will continue as long as the war continues, which is why the president wants it to end."
