The Standby Signal, No. 1 will remain in force at least until 6 p.m today. In the past few hours, the tropical depression over the central and northern parts of the South China Sea moved steadily towards the seas south of Hainan Island and slightly intensified. 

It will continue to move westwards today. It will be closest to Hong Kong in the early afternoon, skirting around 600 kilometres or more from the territory. 

Unless the tropical depression adopts a track closer to the coast of Guangdong, the chance of persistent strong winds generally over the territory will be relatively low. 

Under the combined effect of the tropical depression and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, local winds will be occasionally strong today over parts of the territory, including offshore and on high ground.
