The Observatory will issue the Standby Signal, No. 1 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. tonight.
The broad area of low pressure over the central and northern parts of the South China Sea has intensified into a tropical depression. It is expected to enter within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong very soon.
According to the present forecast, the tropical depression will move towards the seas south of Hainan Island, and will be closest to Hong Kong around noon tomorrow (29 August), skirting around 600 kilometres or more from the territory.
Under its combined effect with the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, it will be windy over the northern part of the South China Sea and the coast of southern China today and tomorrow.
Unless the tropical cyclone intensifies significantly or adopts a track closer to the coast of Guangdong, the chance of persistent strong winds generally over the territory is expected to be relatively low.
