The broad area of low pressure over the central and northern parts of the South China Sea adopted a southward track overnight and is now located outside of 800 kilometres of Hong Kong.

The broad area of low pressure is consolidating and is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone gradually today.

It is expected to enter within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong later today, and the Observatory will consider issuing the Standby Signal, No. 1 tonight.

The tropical cyclone will move in the general direction of the seas south of Hainan Island. It will be the closest to Hong Kong around noon tomorrow, skirting about 600 kilometres or more from the territory.

Under its combined effect with the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, it will be windy over the northern part of the South China Sea and the coast of southern China tomorrow.

Local winds will be occasionally strong offshore and on high ground. There will be swells.

Unless the tropical cyclone intensifies significantly or adopts a track closer to the coast of Guangdong, the chance of persistent strong winds generally over the territory is expected to be relatively low.
