At the under-construction Tung Chung East MTR Station, tiles whose origin is inconsistent with what's stated in the contract were allegedly used for non-structural partition walls of station equipment rooms.

The MTR Corporation has reported the case to the police on Wednesday afternoon. The rail operator says the in early June, it had already raised doubts over whether the bricks provided came from the authorised manufacturer. Despite repeated requests through the main contractor, the subcontractor has failed to provide proof of authorised sourcing.

The company has instructed the main contractor to submit a full report while MTR will carry out its "independent checking and verification."

MTRC stresses it will follow up strictly in accordance with contract terms -- and current assessments indicate the incident does not affect the overall project schedule.

Workmen allegedly used mainland-manufactured tiles bearing the brand name "Beijing YTong"
instead of German-made "YTong."
