Banyan moth infestation around trees in Western District has raised safety concerns in the area.
Among the latest casualty in recent weeks are stonewall trees in Sai Ying Pun.
This is a popular photo spot at this park in Sai Ying Pun. But upon closer inspection, hidden dangers lurk -- banyan moths can be seen around the tree.
The larvae mainly feed on leaves of the Chinese banyan with treetops seen thinning and canopies shrinking.
Arborist Yuen Tat-shing worries the infestation could damage roots and compromise the trees' structural safety, elevating the risks to passersby and the public.
He calls on the government to step up pest-control efforts.
In response, the Development Bureau says the infestation was detected earlier this month and workers have applied pesticide in the area. The Architectural Services Department says it will continue to monitor tree conditions and step up pest control efforts once the needs arise.
