More details of the shocking family tragedy in Yau Ma Tei tonight.

A father and his two young children -- an eight-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl -- were found unconscious in their flat this afternoon.

The children were later pronounced dead at hospital while the father is still in critical condition with a knife wound at the neck.

The incident occured at Kam Wah Building on Canton Road.

Around 3 p.m., a woman called the police, saying that the son had not arrived at the tutoring centre on time, and she was concerned about the safety of her husband and children.

Upon arrival, police and rescue personnel forced their way into the apartment and found a 40-year-old man, an 8-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl unconscious.

The two children bore no visible injuries leaving investigators to suspect suffocation.

Police tonight say the case is being treated as a double murder and attempted suicide.

Early findings show the family had no prior record of domestic violence nor any history of mental illness.

But in recent months, mounting debts -- reportedly around 2 million dollars -- had weighed heavily on the father.

Police say the case is tragedy -- adding that the motive remainds under investigation.

The family of five had been living in the unit with the two children who perished being the second and third born.

Social workers confirmed the family was not under government supervision but have since contacted the surviving relatives to offer welfare support.
