To celebrate the 45th anniversary of the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, the city staged a half-hour drone and light show tonight.

The spectacle features multiple drone formations reflecting the city's spirit of perserverance and 45 years of development.

Timed to mark the exact date of the Special Economic Zone's founding, the air-borne show began at 8:26 p.m. in a dual venue format, illuminating the skies of Shenzhen Citizen Square and Shenzhen Talent Park.

The show opened with beams of light unfurling like a giant scroll as 12,000 drones took flight in carefully choreographed formations.

Then came the mythical bird "Peng" which is the symbol of Shenzhen encapsulating the city's soaring spirit and rapid transformation.

That's followed by the "ox" which symbolises the pioneering hard work that laid the foundation of Shenzhen's prosperity today with iconic landmarks, cutting-edge industries and tech -- from smartphones to electric vehicles and robotics.

That paid tribute to Shenzhen's homegrown tech giants including Tencent, BYD, Huawei and DJI, which have driven the city's rise as a hub of innovation over the past 45 years.

The finale featured popular cartoon dinosaur "Nai Long" reaching out to touch a robot's fingertip -- a nod to the epoch-making role of AI in Shenzhen's future.

Shenzhen's metamorphosis, immortalised in these images as the municipal government also holds a photo exhibition to commemorate the SEZ's 45th anniversary.

Like a time capsule, they chart Shenzhen's meteoric rise from barren fields to a bustling metropolis with a skyscraper-studded skyline through four and a half decades.

One striking picture documents the Shekou Industrial Zone in 1981 where workers raced against the clock under the banner "Time is money, efficiency is life," embodying the determination of Shenzhen people to seize the opportunities of reform.

This student praises the city's advancement in artificial intelligence and greenery efforts, adding that they owe much to the pioneers in Shenzhen, as without their hard work, the city would not be what it is today.

This former photojournalist recalls risking his life in 1995 to climb 100 metres up a crane to capture the topping-out of the "Di Wang Tower," also known as Shun Hing Square -- then Asia's tallest building.

He says most reporters left after the ribbon-cutting ceremony but he stayed behind for the "real story."

He says watching the construction workers scale such heights showed a courage few can imagine.

On August 26th, 1980, the State Council approved the establishment of the first batch of special economic zones in Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Shantou and Xiamen.

Deng Xiaoping, who strongly supported the policy, later praised Shenzhen's success during his 1984 southern tour.

From the 1980s onward, the city witnessed what became known as the "Shenzhen speed," referring to the breakneck pace of city development.

Its GDP surged from 270 million yuan in 1980 to 3.6 trillion yuan in 2024, ranking third nationwide.
