Heavy rains and fierce winds pounded parts of Southeast Asia as Typhoon Kajiki crossed into Laos and weakened into a tropical depression.

Vietnamese authorities said Kajiki has so far killed at least four people and injured 13 others in the country's northern and central regions.

The storm made landfall on Vietnam's north central coast yesterday with gusts of up to 130 kilometres per hour.

In Hanoi, traffic was snarled due to heavy downpours.

Widespread blackouts were reported in the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, and Phu Tho.

Two airports in Thanh Hoa and Quang Binh were still closed after flights were grounded on Monday.

Vietnam's government said nearly 7,000 homes were damaged and 28,800 hectares have been inundated.

The weather agency forecast continued rains through Tuesday, with some areas likely to get up to 150 millimetres, potentially causing flooding and landslides.
