Israel has launched a pair of strikes on the only functioning public hospital in southern Gaza, killing at least 20 Palestinians, including medical personnel and journalists.
Outrage and grief gripped the streets of southern Gaza as a major medical facility in the region became a scene of devastation.
On Monday, Israeli warplanes targeted the fourth floor of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis with at least one missile, followed by a second attack minutes later.
Authorities confirmed five Gazan journalists from the Associated Press, Reuters and Al Jazeera were among the 20 victims, bringing the total number of journalists killed by Israel in the Strip since October 7th, 2023 to 245.
Mariam Dagga, a 33-year-old visual journalist freelancing for the AP during the war, died in the strike.
Mariam's father led funeral prayers for his daughter later on Monday and said her death was "a loss for all of Gaza" because she was loved in the entire enclave. He said Mariam "wished the best for everyone" and was "always active in her work."
Mariam's sister remembered that she talked a lot about death in the last few days and that she expected it to happen at any moment.
Throughout her career, Mariam captured scenes of spiralling humanitarian crises faced by ordinary Palestinians. Her last report was about families displaced from homes.
The Gaza-based health authorities described the airstrike as "a continuation of the systematic destruction" of the health system.
They have urged the international community to take immediate and urgent action to protect humanitarian personnel.
The attack immediately drew global condemnation.
Qatar, Turkiye, Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, as well as United Nations Secretary-General expressed strong denunciation of Israel's atrocities while calling on an end to these crimes.
The foreign ministry in Beijing said they were shocked and condemn the unfortunate deaths in the conflict.
The ministry said China is closely following the current situation in Gaza, and opposes and condemns all acts that harm civilians, damage civilian facilities, and violate international law.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu conceded the killing of journalists and first responders and referred to their deaths as a "tragic mishap."
The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement that it "regrets any harm to uninvolved individuals and does not target journalists as such."
An initial inquiry was launched into the incident.
