Public schools reopened on Monday in the U.S. capital with some parents on edge over the presence of armed National Guard troops.

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said she sympathised with the dilemma of immigrant parents who may be keeping their children home for fear of being detained by federal agents.

Social media parents groups were buzzing with reports and rumours of checkpoints and arrests.

School openings took place against the background that some patrolling National Guard units now carry firearms.

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said it meant the guards were "capable of defending themselves and others."

While President Donald Trump is considering deploying troops to Chicago, the city's mayor, Brandon Johnson, said Chicago is not among the most dangerous in the U.S. and should not be targeted for a "military occupation."
