Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Iran's ambassador in Australia will be expelled after intelligence revealed the Iranian government was behind at least two antisemitic attacks in the country.
"Since the terrible events of October 7th, 2023, we have witnessed a number of appalling antisemitic attacks against Australia's Jewish community. I've made it clear that these sorts of incidents have no place in Australia, and that I wanted ASIO (Australian Security Intelligence Organisation) and the AFP (Australian Federal Police) to investigate as a priority. ASIO has now gathered enough credible intelligence to reach a deeply disturbing conclusion that the Iranian government directed at least two of these attacks," said Albanese.
Shortly before the announcement, the Australian government withdrew Australian diplomats posted in Iran to a third country.
There has been a steep rise in antisemitic events in Sydney and Melbourne since the Israel-Hamas war began in 2023.
Australia will also legislate to list Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation.
