Health authorities are investigating an outbreak of antibiotic-resistant bacteria known as CPE at a care home in Yuen Long.

The Hospital Authority revealed today three female patients at Kwong Wah Hospital are also confirmed to be CPE carriers.

Aged 17 to 40, all three patients infected with Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae or CPE stayed in a neurosurgery ward at Kwong Wah Hospital.

One patient is now being treated in isolation at Kwong Wah and is in stable condition. The other two patients have been discharged.

An outbreak involving CPE has also erupted at this Yuen Long care home.

Health authorities inspected the facility today and isolated CPE carriers from other residents.

That comes after three male and three female asymptomatic residents aged between 68 and 85 recently attended a public hospital due to their underlying illnesses and tested positive for CPE.

The Centre for Health Protection says the care home did not follow infection control guidelines, while the facility's manager cited procedural difficulties.

The manager notes it's hard to offer "entirely isolated rooms" or put on and take off disposable protection gear right away every time after taking care of infected residents. She hopes more support can be given by health authorities.

CPE can cause infections in various parts of the body, including urinary tract infections or intra-abdominal infections.

It is commonly resistant to multiple antibiotics, limiting therapeutic options, and may render severe clinical infections difficult to treat.
