The National Security Department of the police has charged a 19-year-old Hong Kong woman with committing an act with seditious intent.

She is suspected of promoting subversive group "Hong Kong Parliament." She allegedly broke the law while in Canada.

The girl was brought before a court today and has been remanded in custody until her next appearance on October 31st.

Nineteen-year-old defendant Lam Fei appeared at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts in the afternoon.

She faces one count of "doing with a seditious intention an act or acts that had a seditious intention."

The National Security Department of the police alleges that from March to May this year, the girl filmed promotional videos for "the elections of Hong Kong Parliament" and called on others to vote through social media in an attempt to overthrow and undermine the central and Hong Kong governments.

It is understood that she is the ex-girlfriend of Tony Lam, who is on the police's wanted list.

The couple joined the group "Hong Kong Democratic Independence Union" last year and later fled to Taiwan together.

After Lam announced his candidacy for "Hong Kong Parliament" elections, he was deported by Taiwan authorities. The pair then fled to Canada.

Police say that during this period, the defendant served as an assistant to another absconder Alan Keung to promote the "Hong Kong Democratic Independence Union." She reportedly planned to take part in the "Hong Kong Parliament" elections too but did not meet the 21-year-old threshold.

The couple were financially struggling in Canada and are debt-laden. The girl eventually returned to Hong Kong alone and was arrested by the police.

While the filming took place in Canada, police say the Hong Kong National Security Law has extraterritorial effect.

Earlier, a Hong Kong student studying in Japan made Hong Kong independence-related comments overseas and was sentenced to two months in prison after returning to the SAR.

Police remind citizens that committing an act with a seditious intention is a serious offence and is punishable by seven years' imprisonment on first conviction.
