Vietnam is being lashed by rain and 166 kilometre-per-hour winds as typhoon Kajiki hits.

Trees swayed with many toppled over.

Streets resembled rivers as Vietnam deals with its strongest storm of the year.

One man died in Nghe An province.

The government had warned citizens the weather would be "extremely dangerous."

Airports and schools are closed and thousands of people have been evacuated.

At its strongest at sea, Kajiki weakened slightly before making landfall.

Power in several locations has been cut, roofs were blown off houses and floating fishing farms washed away.

The storm is slowly moving inland towards Laos and northern Thailand.
