The Tobacco and Alcohol Control Office today began its six-day enforcement operation at public transport facilities to combat illegal smoking.

The efforts are part of the government's 10 measures to rein in tobacco use, including expanding no-smoking areas.

Starting on August 31st, such areas will cover 10 new public transport facilities, including Chai Wan East Temporary Bus Terminus, the Convention and Exhibition Station in Wan Chai and Wong Chuk Hang Station.

Altogether, 272 non-smoking public transport locations will be established.

Those who smoke in a designated no-smoking area or on public transport will be liable to a fine of 1,500 dollars.
