At the Tung Chung East MTR Station, which is under construction, workers are suspected to have used tiles whose origin is inconsistent with what's stated in the contract.
The MTR Corporation has requested a report from the project's contractor.
It has been reported that the main contractor of the Tung Chung East MTR Station construction project tendered for the wall tiles inside the station, with the specification that the German-made "YTong" tiles would be used.
But workmen allegedly used mainland-manufactured tiles bearing the brand name "Beijing YiTong" with the counterfeit trademark "YTong" affixed.
Only after the allegations came to light did the contractor remove the brick tiles.
In response to media enquiries, the MTR Corporation says it received a letter of complaint about the materials used at Tung Chung East Station and inquired with the main contractor about the situation and requested them to look into the case.
The railway company says it is understood that the materials involved are used for non-structural partition walls of station equipment rooms.
And the sub-contractor hired by the main contractor was responsible for the procurement with construction having begun in June.
The main contractor has confirmed with the MTRC that the batch of tiles in question will not be used in the works.
Lawmaker Gary Zhang, a former MTR engineer, says the main contractor usually recommends which construction materials to use to the rail group, and as long as they meet the performance requirements under the contract and are approved by the MTRC, the materials can be used for construction.
He says procedural slips might be to blame when the main contractor wanted to switch the material but the subcontractor had already supplied another brand of material before the MTR approval process was completed.
Zhang also says there's another possibility which is more serious and could lead to legal liabilities -- that the subcontractor deliberately delivered tiles different from what's stated in their contract.
The MTRC says it will continue to instruct and supervise the main contractor to complete the works on time, with specifications, quality and quantity in line with the contract.
The rail operator says the main contractor will submit a report which will be "independently" checked and verified.
