U.S. President Donald Trump is hosting South Korean President Lee Jae-myung in Washington for their first summit meeting on Monday.

The two countries agreed on a trade deal last month lowering U.S. tariffs on South Korean products to 15 percent from a threatened 25 percent.

Alongside trade, the U.S. is keen to see an increase in South Korea's defence budget instead of heavy reliance on American forces.

There is also expectation that Lee will announce more investment in the U.S., in addition to a 350-billion-U.S.-dollar package agreed last month.

This follows Lee's meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba last Saturday in a bid to set aside their past differences as they face common challenges from the U.S., their mutual ally.

The two countries also reaffirmed they would work together with the U.S. towards ending North Korea's nuclear and missile development programme.
