The observatory says an area of low pressure east of the Philippines is forecast to move to the central part of the South China Sea later this week, and bring unsettled weather to Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Kajiki, which moved further away from the city over the weekend, made landfall in Vietnam this afternoon and is slowly moving inland into Laos and northern Thailand.

Typhoon Kajiki, the 13th typhoon of the year, hit Vietnam's central and northern coastal regions with heavy rain and gusts.

Dozens of fights ground to a halt as two airports in Thanh Hoa and Quang Binh provinces closed.

The Vietnamese government said at least 30,000 people had been evacuated on Monday.

Tens of thousands of soldiers and paramilitary personnel were mobilised to help with the evacuation and rescue operations.

In China's southernmost province Hainan, the typhoon brushed past the popular resort city of Sanya, downing trees and damaging roads and water supply systems.

No casualties have been reported so far.

Authorities warned of heavy rain and isolated storms in the southern part of the island.

The Sanya Phoenix International Airport has resumed normal operations, and the three major ports in Haikou are expected to reopen on Monday.
