In his bid to crack down on crime, homelessness and illegal immigration, U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that major cities like Chicago and New York could receive similar treatment to what is being done in Washington, D.C.,where hundreds of National Guard troops are stationed.
In a clash with Maryland Governor Wes Moore over crime levels, Trump said he was also prepared to send troops to Baltimore.
About a hundred people were seen banging spoons on pots and chanting on Sunday night to protest against federal agents who were carrying out a raid on a house in Washington D.C.
The agents left with boxes a few hours later.
A patchwork of protests have erupted in the streets after the Republican governors of three states said last week that they were sending hundreds of National Guard troops to the nation's capital at Trump's request.
It was part of Trump's self-proclaimed crime crackdown, though Justice Department data shows the city's violent crime hit a 30-year low last year.
The Pentagon said some Guard units patrolling Washington are now carrying firearms in escalation of the military deployment.
The Guard's Joint Task Force-DC said in a settlement the troops would only use force "as a last resort and solely in response to an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm."
Trump said he was considering expanding troop deployments to Democratic strongholds, such as Chicago, New York and Baltimore, despite remarks from Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries that the president did not have the authority to do so.
Trump singled out Chicago last week, calling it a "mess" and "dangerous,"and saying the residents were "screaming for us to come."
Sources say there had been initial planning at the Pentagon about a potential National Guard takeover in Chicago.
Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed grave concerns about the impact of "any unlawful deployment."
Johnson noted the city doesn't need "a military occupation" and would sue to block one, adding there has been no communication from the White House about a possible military deployment.
