The mainland's Ministry of Science and Technology has approved the establishment of 15 re-structured State Key Laboratories in Hong Kong.
A plaque presentation ceremony was held at government headquarters earlier today.
Hong Kong's innovative and technological sector has further synchronised with its mainland counterparts with the establishment of 15 re-structured State Key Laboratories, or SKLs, in the city.
To commemorate the occasion, an award ceremony was held at government's headquarters today, attended by Minister of Science and Technology Yin Hejun, Chief Executive John Lee, as well as Director of the Liaison Office Zhou Ji.
Hosted at several of the city's top universities, the re-structured SKLs include HKU's SKL of Emerging Infectious Diseases, CUHK's SKL of Translational Oncology and HKUST's SKL of Nervous System Disorders.
They are directed by microbiologist Yuen Kwok-yung, CUHK President Dennis Lo and HKUST President Nancy Ip respectively.
This as Minister of Science and Technology Yin Hejun said Key State Labs displaying the Hong Kong brand serve as an important component of the nation's strategic technological capabilities.
Chief Executive John Lee, meanwhile, stressed the labs serve as an essential platform for boosting cooperation between Hong Kong and overseas institutions and scientific organisations, cementing the city's status as a gathering hub for innovative talent.
Currently, the Innovation and Technology Commission provides an annual funding of up to 20 million dollars for each laboratory as an additional source of funding, in hopes of strengthening their research capabilities and build up their infrastructural support.
