Painted bricks originated from the Warring States Period and then flourished in the Han Dynasty. They were primarily used in tomb mural compositions.

The Gaotai County Museum in China's northwestern Gansu province held an exhibition featuring over one hundred of these bricks excavated from Wei-Jin Period tombs along the Hexi Corrider, capturing the daily lives of ancient people from a millennium ago.
