The government is set to announce the outcome of its review of the "M" Mark Events scheme, which subsidises the city's major sports events.
Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law says the administration will focus on supporting international sports events to ensure more precise allocation of government resources.
She says the funding will depend on the events' economic benefits, appeal to tourists and their effects on promoting the city's sport development. The funding will be capped at 6 million to 15 million dollars.
Earlier reports cited sources that the administration is inclined to exclusively fund world-class sport events through the "M" Mark scheme, meaning regional contests will no longer be eligible.
Introduced in 2004, the "M" Mark scheme sponsored events in the past including the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon and Rugby Sevens.
It is reported that regional sports events can apply for grants through the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
The change comes after considering the city's limited capacity to host multiple large-scale events within a short period.
