Some 89,600 live rodents were captured by the government here in Hong Kong in 2024.
That's 40 percent more than those captured in 2023.
Near Hau Tei Square in Tsuen Wan saw the most rodents -- 240 were caught, a threefold increase from 2023.
The significant increase in rats caught was likely due to improved technology used by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department.
Hygiene teams started using thermal imaging cameras equipped with AI to detect rodent activity, rather than just trapping and baiting.
The camera images enabled staff to identify the presence of rodents far more precisely than before.
