In the UK, a refuse truck driver who struck and killed an 11-year-old Hong Kong-born schoolboy cyclist last year was sentenced to community service.

The boy, surnamed Wong, was cycling to school in Edinburgh in March, 2024.

The court heard that the truck driver, 29-year-old Ross Wallace, exited the parking area without "looking towards the pavement on his left" and only stopped after a colleague shouted. The boy died at the scene.

Wallace admitted to causing death by careless driving.

Citing an early guilty plea, a lack of previous convictions and expression of regret, Scotland's sheriff handed down a sentence of 133-hour community service and a year-long driving ban.

The boy's school praised the deceased as "kind and curious" while his grieving family described the boy as "a perfect son."
