A fatal fire broke out in the afternoon at Mido Apartment on King's Road in North Point, leaving one dead and at least six people injured.
Investigators believe the fire started from an air conditioner in one of the subdivided units.
The deceased was an elderly resident of around 70 years old, who sustained severe burns and later succumbed to his injuries.
Some workers on the rooftop of Mido Apartment captured plumes of smoke billowing out.
The flames erupted at a unit on the 14th floor at around 4 p.m.
Firefighters rushed to the scene to douse the blaze.
Dozens of residents were evacuated with multiple suffering from smoke inhalation, including a 16-year-old girl who was sent to hospital.
Some residents said the whole corridor was engulfed in smoke, so they had to crawl their way through, adding that they had to escape from the windows with the help of scaffolding workers outside the walls.
After nightfall, residents were allowed to return to the building.
The Fire Services Department says the floor where the blaze broke out had four flats. Three of them were subdivided into multiple units. The affected flat -- about 150 square metres -- were split into eight rooms. The meters and furniture could be seen heavily charred.
