U.S. President Donald Trump's administration and European Union officials on Thursday announced the foundations of their trade deal.

The initial agreement imposes a stiff 15 percent import tax on 70 percent of European goods exported to the U.S.

But key areas including wine, spirits, and steel were left blank, indicating that talks would continue.

Goods traded between the two economies represent the largest bilateral trading relationship in the world, involving 2 trillion US dollars annually.

The key provisions are the 15 percent tariff on most EU goods, a zero rate on U.S. cars and other industrial goods exported to the EU.

A range of exceptions to the 15 percent rate will be allowed for aircraft and aircraft parts, pharmaceuticals.
