The Hong Kong Observatory says the Standby Signal No.1 may be issued tonight when the area of low pressure over Luzon will enter the South China Sea and intensify into a tropical cyclone.
The forecaster expects the low pressure area will enter within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong tonight.
The tropical cyclone will move across the central and northern parts of the South China Sea and intensify gradually over the weekend, maintaining a distance of at least 500 kilometres or more from Hong Kong, in the general direction of the southern part of Hainan Island and the seas south of the region.
The weather in Hong Kong is expected to be mainly fine and very hot at first tomorrow, with a few showers and squally thunderstorms at night.
