The defence for former media tycoon Jimmy Lai continued their closing argument in the city's landmark national security trial today.
The seventy-seven-year-old is charged with counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and publish seditious material. He faces a maximum life sentence.
Jimmy Lai's national security trial resumed at West Kowloon Law Courts in the morning.
On the second day of his closing argument, Lai's defence lawyer Robert Pang referred to Lai's Twitter posts and said the former media tycoon did not call for foreign sanctions against China and Hong Kong after the implementation of the national security law.
Pang also said Lai and his assistant, Mark Simon, rarely discussed political topics. Judge Alex Lee said that statement was not true based on their WhatsApp conversations.
Pang said the prosecution had accused Lai of proposing international lobbying and being in contact with influential figures from the U.S. government.
Pang said Lai had known the group for years and they took the same interest in Hong Kong and international affairs by discussing the relevant issues. Pang described the situation as "much as we might discuss the law at a dim sum table."
Referring to the prosecution's closing argument, which said Lai had demanded sanctions when speaking with his guests on his talk show, "Live Chat with Jimmy Lai." Pang argued that an assumption of collusion with any foreigner Lai spoke with would make him look suspicious.
The proceedings will continue on Friday.
