The U.S. State Department announced sanctions on four International Criminal Court officials, including two judges and two prosecutors.

The ICC called the sanctions "a flagrant attack against the independence of an impartial judicial institution".

Washington claimed the four sanctioned judges had been instrumental in efforts to prosecute Americans and Israelis.

As a result of the sanctions, any assets these officials hold in the U.S. are frozen.

The four are from Canada, France, Fiji and Senegal.

The sanctions were immediately denounced by both the court and the United Nations.

The U.S. is not a member of the court, and has already imposed penalties on other court officials in the past.
