Israel's military said it will call up 60,000 reservists ahead of an expanding military operation in Gaza City. Many residents have chosen to stay despite the danger fearing nowhere is safe in a territory facing shortages of food, water and other necessities.

This as United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, after Israel announced the first steps of its operation to take over Gaza City.

Tracey Furniss has more.

Dozens of people on trucks coming from Zikim crossing some carrying the injured and others carrying food.

Witnesses, health officials and the U.N. human rights office say Israeli forces have killed hundreds of people seeking aid from G.H.F. (Gaza Humanitarian Foundation) sites and U.N. convoys since Israel eased a two-and-a-half month blockade on Gaza in May.

And also for the workers and the organisations bringing in the aid it is now becoming more dangerous.

John Acree, Gaza Humanitarian Foundation Executive Director said: "Many of our local workers have had to move their families repeatedly to avoid being targeted. In some cases, Hamas has directly contacted relatives and warned them to force their loved ones to quit or face consequences. Nearly everyone associated with GHF who has gone public has faced death threats, harassment of their families and vandalism of their homes simply for trying to feed the Palestinian people in Gaza, myself included."

This as Palestinians in Deir al-Balah and Zawaida in Gaza reacted to a plan by Israel's military to call up tens of thousands of reservists and extend the service of others ahead of an expanded military operation in Gaza City.

This displaced Palestinian said that the military expansion would mean "we will see more destruction, killings, devastation, starvation and siege."

Meanwhile United Nations chief Antonio Guterres repeated his call for a ceasefire in Gaza Thursday with Israel preparing to launch a new assault in Gaza City
and other heavily populated areas.

Antonio Guterres, U.N. Secretary-General said "I must reiterate that it is vital to reach immediately a ceasefire in Gaza, and the unconditional release of all hostages and to avoid the massive death and destruction that a military operation against Gaza City would inevitably cause."
