President Xi Jinping attended a grand gathering and parade in Lhasa, the capital of the Xizang Autonomous Region in China's western edge, to mark 60 years of Chinese Communist Party rule.
Xizang is the current official English name for Tibet used by the Autonomous Region.
President Xi Jinping, who led a central government delegation, joined the gathering held at the Potala Palace in Xizang(Tibet) this morning.
Around 20,000 local officials and people from local ethnic groups took part in the event.
Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing delivered congratulatory messages from the Chinese Communist Party's Central Committee and the State Council.
Then the head of the central delegation, Wang Huning, presented a plaque bearing Xi's inscription as a gift to the Xizang Autonomous Region.
Wang has called on Xizang to uphold and strengthen the overall Party leadership in order to consolidate a harmonious and stable society.
In his address, Wang said the autonomous region's founding in 1965 was an epoch-making event and that Xizang has entered its best period of development with the most substantial progress.
Wang warned any separatist activities and external interference that meddle in Xizang affairs with attempts to disrupt its stability are doomed to fail.
Also speaking at the event was the region's party chief Wang Junzheng, who said Xi's visit reflected the high importance the leader attached to Xizang.
He added Xizang is now thriving thanks to the Party's enlightened leadership as well as the superiority of the socialist system.
A colourful array of floats later went past the square, showcasing the development brought to the snowy plateau over the past 60 years.
Over 4,000 people attended the parade in formations that represented the culture and history of seven cities and regions in Xizang.
