Woman sentenced to indefinite hospital order for stabbing daughter to death

A woman diagnosed with schizophrenia was sentenced to an indefinite term of custody at a psychiatric centre after stabbing her daughter to death four years ago. She was convicted of manslaughter.
The incident occurred in December 2021. Part-time security guard Yang Leying, 46 years old at the time, stabbed her 24-year-old daughter to death with a meat-cutting fork at her public rental housing unit in Wong Tai Sin, believing that she had to harm her daughter to save her son.
The defendant pleaded guilty after prosecutors agreed to reduce her original murder charge to manslaughter on the basis that she was suffering from "an abnormality of the mind."
In sentencing, the judge quoted the defence's plea that the defendant expressed remorse and has been receiving psychiatric treatment during the remand period and that her condition had improved.
