United States Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed Washington is vying for a 10 percent stake in computer chip company Intel.

The proposed taking of equity in Intel would be in exchange for cash grants approved by the administration of former U.S. President Joe Biden.

The government's intervention in corporate matters has worried critics who say President Donald Trump's actions create new categories of corporate risk, and that a bad bet could mean a hit to taxpayer funds.

Lutnick, however, takes a different stance.

He told CNBC that the administration thinks America should get the benefit of the bargain.

Sources say Lutnick is looking into expanding the plan to other chip companies.

Washington has also made unusual deals with other U.S. companies recent including allowing AI chip giant Nvidia to sell its H20 chips to China in exchange for the U.S. government receiving 15 percent of those sales.
