China has about 1,900 wild giant pandas. Currently, three giant pandas are undergoing "wild training" programmes to prepare them for a return to their natural habitat.

After a panda is born, it has to learn survival skills in the wild from its mother.

Staff have to disguise themselves as giant pandas when patrolling the grounds and observing the pandas' readiness, including their ability to forage independently, find water sources and avoid predators.

How long this "training course" will take depends on how "wild-savvy" the pandas are.

So far, China's Giant Panda Conservation and Research Centre has released 11 giant pandas back to the wild. Nine of them have survived -- a higher survival rate than that of many large wild animals globally.
