Standby Signal No. 1 in force at least until noon

According to the Hong Kong Observatory's forecast, the tropical depression over the north-central part of the South China Sea will maintain a distance of 600 kilometres or above from Hong Kong this morning. It is moving towards the vicinity of Hainan Island. The Standby Signal No. 1 will remain in force at least until noon. Local winds are expected to strengthen later today. 

Depending on the distance of the tropical depression from Hong Kong and the change in local winds, the observatory will assess the need to issue the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 between noon and 6 p.m. today.
