Police have arrested two men and one woman on suspicion of recruiting mainland drivers to operate ride-hailing vehicles in Hong Kong using fake identity documents.

The suspects were reportedly part of a criminal group that handled the entire operation -- from recruiting drivers in mainland China and arranging visitor visas to providing private cars and platform accounts.

The platform involved was "Gaode," also internationally marketed as "Amap" developed by AutoNavi, a subsidiary of Alibaba Group.

This marks the second time in a week that illegal drivers have been uncovered on the platform.

Police have charged the trio with conspiracy to defraud and money laundering.

Police say while current registration only requires uploading an ID photo, the department is working with platforms to tighten verification and close loopholes to protect both passengers and road users.
