To garner more support from European allies, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy headed to London and held a breakfast meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Both agreed there was a powerful sense of unity and a strong resolve to secure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
Downing Street said they look forward to Friday's Trump-Putin summit, which they say is a "viable chance to make progress as long as Putin takes action to prove he is serious about peace."
A Ukrainian drone strike has damaged apartment buildings in Russia's southern city of Rostov-on-Don, which is near the border with Ukraine. It caused a huge explosion and more than 10 civilians were wounded.
And several people were injured when a Ukrainian drone crashed into a moving car in Belgorod City Thursday morning. A government building in the regional capital was also under attack.
Despite the ongoing conflict, a new prisoner-of-war swap was held between Russia and Ukraine, just a day ahead of the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska.
Ukraine and Russia freed 84 captives each with the collaboration of the United Arab Emirates.
Zelenskyy said those freed from Russian captivity included civilians held by Russia since 2014, 2016 and 2017, as well as soldiers who defended the city of Mariupol.
The Ukrainian president met Starmer at 10 Downing Street on Thursday. Neither of them answered questions from reporters.
As the one-hour meeting came to a close, Starmer walked Zelenskyy back to his waiting car and they chatted and hugged before his departure. This is seen as a strong show of support, as leaders usually walk alone when leaving Number 10.
Posting on social media, Zelenskyy noted possible security guarantees for Ukraine were discussed in detail during their "productive" talk.
Those security guarantees should ensure lasting peace if the U.S. succeeds in pressing Russia to stop the killings.
The pair also talked about the U.K. and Ukraine's cooperation over their arsenal, including investment and production of drones.
Starmer later remarked at a VJ Day reception to mark 80 years since Japan's surrender in World War Two, saying Ukraine's war against Russia has the same values in the fight against the Axis Powers.
He stated: "I sat on this terrace this very morning with President Zelenskyy, who is fighting for the same values as we were fighting for."
