Some 30,000 visitors at the World Expo being held in Osaka were stranded at the venue and nearby metro stations, after train services were suspended due to electricity failure on Wednesday night.
The incident happened after power outages hit the "third rail" that supplies electricity to train cars at the Chuo Line.
At least 36 people felt unwell and were taken to hospital from the Expo site and the surrounding areas overnight.
The Chuo line offers the sole railway connection to Yumeshima, the artificial island hosting the Expo and is used by around 70 percent of visitors.
Over 150 countries and regions are taking part in the Expo where they showcase their culture and inventions.
The Expo is being held between April 13 and October 13, and had earlier welcomed its 10 millionth visitor.
